Cormorant Fishing Print E-mail

While visiting relatives in Maine, we stopped at the harbor in Belfast, Maine looking for water birds. There were 2 dozen Double-Crested Cormorants perched on a distant boat dock grooming and air drying their wings. To our pleasant surprise, one popped up right in front of us by the pier.

I saw a pair of Double-Crested Cormorants at the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. This one was diving for fish, while the other one was drying its wings.

There were alot of Double-crested Cormorants perched on protuding rocks in Monterey Bay, California.  This guy had just finished fishing and was air drying his wings, a common behavior of cormorants.

A cormorant perched on a tall light pole.  I took this shot 2 years ago while visiting my daughter in Virginia Beach.
