Herring Gull - 2nd Year Plumage Print E-mail

This is a 2nd year Herring Gull recognizable by its dark bill and rich brown mottled coloring. By the end of its 2nd year, the beak becomes flesh colored with a dark tip. Photo taken at Belfast Harbor in Maine.

This is a 3rd year Herring Gull. He has the orange bill with red spot on the bottom like the adult, but still has some flecking in the white head feathers. Photo taken at Belfast Harbor in Maine.

This adult Herring Gull was perched on the stone pier near where all the Sea Lions were lounging.  He was very tame and let me get real close for this shot.

I was practicing getting in-flight shots of gulls.  This adult herring gull offered me lots of opportunity as he soared up and down the beach above the surf.

This photo was taken in Virginia Beach by a boat dock area. The 2nd year plumage on this Herring Gull is much different from the adult plumage.
