This Brown Pelican was napping in the afternoon sun in Monterey Bay. He was one of many that could be viewed from a pedestrian pathway that followed the shoreline.
There were groups of Brown Pelicans roosting on all the rocky protusions along the waterline in Monterey Bay, California. This one had been for a splash in the water and was busily grooming.
At the northern entrance to the bay bridge heading into Virginia Beach, we stopped to observe the brown pelicans flying out on the bay. This pair was just landing for a short break.
Along the shores of the outer banks where we rented a beach house, we would see these "pelican patrols" all day long. The brown pelicans would ride the air currents coming off the ocean, barely ever flapping their wings.
