After grabbing peanuts, the male red-bellied woodpecker would often make a brief stop in our mountain ash tree before heading to the woods.

This beautiful red-bellied woodpecker stuck around for about 6 weeks this past winter (2007).  He was very fond of the shelled peanuts I put out on the ground.

A pair of fox sparrows showed up about 6 weeks earlier than normal this year (2007).  It was a treat to have them around during the snowy weeks of January and February..

Chickadees never slow down even in the coldest weather.  It is a joy to hear their cheery chickadee - dee - dee on snowy, wintry days.

This bluejay was content with this snowy framed setting.  He stayed in this perch position for about 10 minutes without moving while a 15 MPH wind fluffed his feathers.

This past winter (2007) was the first year we had bluebird (3)during the winter months. We provided mealworms and roasted grubs which they devoured multiple time daily.

Goldfinches are year round residents in upstate New York.  They are fine in the coldest weather as long as they have a good food source to keep their body heat up.  Thistle seed is always a favorite.

It was just by chance that I discovered this nest while walking my dogs.  A male was entering the tree with food in its beak, so I went to investigate.

Within a week of discovering this nest, the chicks had hatched.  I watched them for a few days, but the adults were very upset at my presence, so I stopped bothering them.

... or so he thinks all puffed up and displaying his wings.  From the expression on the female cowbird, I'm not so sure she is all that impressed.
