A tufted titmouse is very speedy and difficult to photograph most times.  This one stopped briefly while searching for sunflower seeds.

When the sun catches the barn swallows just right, their beautiful coloring really sparkles.  This male was taking a break from food runs to the nest in the barn.

The tree swallows enjoy perching along our horse pasture fence wire.  This one let me get within about 20 feet.

I was near the nest box while taking this shot of a tree swallow. He was on guard duty and not too happy with my presence.

While taking photos of bluebirds, I was surprised to see this pine warbler show up in my lens.  This was the only time we have ever seen one in our yard.

The pine warbler quickly moved to a nail perch on a nesting box.  What a treat to see this beautiful little warbler.

Female yellow-bellied sapsucker arriving at nest with food for 2 chicks.  The female does not have red on the throat, but notice the yellow coloring to her belly feathers.

Only juvenile sapsuckers have visited our backyard.  This male yellow-bellied sapsucker is arriving at the nest hole where there are 2 chicks inside (down the road from our house).  Even though they have red on head and throat, their belly does have yellow on it.

Male Hairy Woodpecker in Locust Tree Print E-mail

Hairy woodpeckers usually announce their arrival in our yard with a loud "cheep".  This male hairy woodpecker uses our locust tree as an approach perch to the feeder area.

Hairy woodpeckers are regular visitors to our feeder areas.  They love the suet and shelled peanuts we put out. Notice how she is bracing herself with her tail feathers.
