This is the last Acorn Woodpecker shot from my Monterey, California trip. The pair had disappeared into their nest hole and then stuck their heads out at the same time.
Periodically, the Acorn Woodpeckers would take a break from collecting acorns and rest at the nest. In this case the male is inside and the female is beside the nest hole.
The Acorn Woodpeckers at my daughter's house in Monterey, California would show up at the pine trees around 7:45 every morning. Acorn collecting and stashing would go on all day until almost sundown. They are very industrious birds!

The Acorn Woodpeckers had 2 nest holes in the tree where they were storing their acorns. Sometimes one of them would go in the hole briefly and look out while another stuffed acorns in holes. The female has a black band across her forehead between the red and white.
This is the busiest time of year for Acorn Woodpeckers as they work all day gathering acorns. Each acorn gets stuffed into one of thousands of holes the woodpeckers have drilled into dead tree trunks.
