American Avocets Feeding - November 12, 2013 - Video Attached
There was a large flock (100+) of American Avocets at Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware. They did not seem to mind the 15 degree windchill as they moved through the shallow water pecking and sweeping their bills back and forth. The sweeping motion brings food (crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates) from the bottom to the surface. They prefer to walk shoulder to shoulder as they feed.
