This is the lady Bufflehead that he successfully attracted over the other competing males. When Buffleheads form pairs and head north to their breeding grounds in Canada, it is the females who lead the way, always returning to their places of birth. Buffleheads nest in the cavities of trees, often in the previously used nest holes of Flicker Woodpeckers.
